What hasn’t changed is the Newby signature: the recognisable names (English Breakfast, Earl Grey, Jasmine) sit next to a handful of blends you won’t find on a supermarket shelf.

My verdict on the Newby Pagoda calendar

What I like first is the honesty of the format: 48 whole-leaf pyramids, 12 real varieties, no mug or trinket inflating the box. Loose-leaf in a pyramid brews closer to a proper cup than a dusty paper bag, and Newby’s grade shows in the Assam and the Jade Oolong.

Where I’d pause is the caffeine spread. Five black teas and three greens against only three caffeine-free infusions means an evening tea drinker runs thin over the 12 days. And the brand doesn’t publish a contents value for 2026, so the ‘worth over £X’ line you’d want simply isn’t there.

As I’d put it: ‘it’s a tea box that respects the tea, and charges you for the leaf, not the gift wrap.’ Fair, not a bargain.

Newby was founded in London in 2000 by Nirmal Sethia, built on sourcing whole-leaf tea and protecting it from light and air, which is the whole argument for the pyramid sachet over the bag. The brand leans hard on provenance and on a tea archive it has spent years assembling.
